Abstract:
Objective To study the aging profile of modified polyethylene used as ammunition packaging under the extreme conditions. Methods The nature exposure test was carried out for 36 months in Dunhuang test station. The changes of appearance, mechanical properties, microstructure, molecular weight and its distribution were monitored, by environmental scanning electron microscope, computer-controlled impact testing, Fourier transformation infrared spectrogram and gel permeation chromatography, to determine the degradation behavior. Results The impact strength reached 60% of original strength after 3months exposure, while cracks appeared on the exposed surfaces in abundance. The microcosmic analysis results showed the chain breaking and oxidation play a leading role in the aging progress. Conclusion The degradation rate of modified polyethylene is rapid in dry-hot environment, while the exposure time of packaging products should be reduced as short as possible.
