Abstract:
Objective To summarize and discuss the methods for preparing superhydrophobic surfaces on magnesium alloys to enhance their corrosion resistance. Methods For the ultra high standard potential, the Mg and magnesium alloys have a relatively high chemical activity. Thus, there are mainly two kinds of methods to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces on magnesium alloy: 1. directly prepare a superhydrophobic surface using the high chemical activity of magnesium alloy; 2. prepare a transition layer on magnesium alloy firstly and then fabricate the superhydrophobic surface. On the other hand, the corrosion behaviors of magnesium alloys with superhydrophobic surfaces were investigated by the electrochemical methods. Results The research progress of fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces with anti-corrosion function on magnesium alloys was summarized and the action mechanism of superhydrophobic surfaces in improving the corrosion resistance was discussed in this paper. Conclusion Though there were a lot of methods for preparing superhydrophobic surfaces on magnesium alloys, most of them cannot be used for the larger-scale production, and the as-prepared superhydrophobic surfaces were lack of durability and mechanical stability.
