Abstract:
Objective To compare and evaluate the protective properties of coatings on structural steel used on helicopter that serves in ocean atmospheric environment. Methods The damage in the protective system of structural steel used on helicopter in service was researched via accelerated testing method of simulating the ocean atmospheric environment. Results Blistering and rusting occurred in the sample of coating A after accelerated testing because of the loose structure of coating A. The |Z| f=0.1Hz measured by the EIS was low so that the protective properties was poor, which was in accordance with the macroscopic obser-vation. Conclusion During the accelerated testing of simulating the ocean atmospheric environment, the small detect in the coatings (such as the porous structure) would become erosion solution entering the fast channel and reducing the protective properties. Corrosion behavior of metal coated by organic coatings can be effectively characterized and the performance of the coating can be accessed by the EIS method.
